Extracorporeal Blood Oxygenation and Ozonation - EBOO
Extracorporeal Blood Oxygenation and Ozonation (EBOO), also known as Recirculatory Hemoperfusion (RHP), is one of the most advanced forms of ozone therapy. It is designed to treat large volumes of blood outside the body by infusing it with a precise mixture of medical-grade ozone and oxygen before returning it to the patient. EBOO is particularly valued for its detoxifying, anti-inflammatory, and immune-modulating effects.
How EBOO Is Performed
EBOO involves the simultaneous withdrawal and reinfusion of blood through two intravenous lines—one in each arm. Blood is drawn from one vein, passed through an ozone-resistant gas exchange chamber where it is exposed to a controlled ozone-oxygen mixture, and then returned to the body through the other vein. The process typically treats 1.5 to 7 liters of blood in a single session and takes about 45–60 minutes. Unlike dialysis, EBOO does not use a dialysis filter but rather a specialized ozone-compatible membrane to avoid contamination or microplastic exposure.
Mechanism of Action
Ozone interacts with blood components to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lipid oxidation products (LOPs), which act as signaling molecules. These trigger antioxidant defenses, improve oxygen metabolism, and modulate immune responses. The result is enhanced cellular detoxification, improved mitochondrial function, and reduced systemic inflammation.
Clinical Benefits and Evidence
-
Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD): A 2005 clinical study demonstrated that EBOO significantly improved skin lesions and reduced pain in PAD patients compared to prostacyclin treatment.
-
Autoimmune and Inflammatory Disorders: EBOO has shown benefits in managing conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, and multiple sclerosis by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress.
-
Chronic Infections and Toxicity: EBOO is used to support detoxification in patients with heavy metal exposure, chronic viral infections (e.g., hepatitis), and long COVID symptoms. It helps eliminate pathogens and neutralize toxins from the bloodstream.
Safety and Considerations
EBOO is generally safe when performed by trained professionals using ozone-compatible equipment. It is not recommended for individuals with G6PD deficiency, severe anemia, or clotting disorders unless under strict medical supervision. Most patients tolerate the procedure well, with minimal side effects such as fatigue or mild detox symptoms. Initial consultation with a doctor is advised. Blood tests within the last 6 months for Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD), Complete Blood Count (CBC), C-Reactive Protein (CRP), and Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) are required.
