Major Autohemotherapy – MAH

Standard Major Autohemotherapy - MAH

Major Autohemotherapy (MAH) is a form of intravenous ozone therapy that has been used in Europe since the 1960s and is gaining traction in integrative medicine worldwide. It involves drawing a patient’s blood, mixing it with medical-grade ozone gas, and reinfusing it into the bloodstream. This process is designed to stimulate the body’s natural healing mechanisms through controlled oxidative stress.

How MAH Is Performed

In a standard MAH session, approximately 200 mL of the patient’s blood is withdrawn into a sterile, heparinized container. Medical-grade ozone (a mixture of ozone and oxygen, typically at 20–40 µg/mL) is then infused into the blood. The ozonated blood is gently mixed and reinfused intravenously over 15–30 minutes. The entire procedure takes about 45 minutes and is performed under sterile conditions by trained professionals.

Mechanism of Action

Ozone therapy works by inducing a mild oxidative stress that activates the NRF2 pathway, which enhances antioxidant defenses, improves mitochondrial function, and modulates immune responses. This hormetic effect helps the body adapt to stress and restore homeostasis.

Clinical Benefits and Conditions Treated

MAH has shown promise in treating a variety of chronic and acute conditions. Some of the most well-documented benefits include:

  1. Chronic Infections (e.g., Lyme disease, hepatitis C) – MAH has demonstrated antiviral and antibacterial effects, helping reduce pathogen load and inflammation.

  2. Autoimmune Disorders (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis, lupus) – By modulating immune activity, MAH can reduce autoimmune flare-ups and improve quality of life.

  3. Cardiovascular Disease – MAH improves blood rheology, oxygen delivery, and endothelial function, which may benefit patients with ischemic heart disease and peripheral artery disease.

  4. Cancer (Adjunctive Therapy) – While not a standalone treatment, MAH may enhance oxygen metabolism and immune surveillance, supporting conventional cancer therapies.

  5. Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia – Improved mitochondrial function and oxygen utilization can help alleviate fatigue and pain in these syndromes.

Safety Profile

MAH is generally well-tolerated with a low incidence of side effects. The most common reaction is a temporary Herxheimer response due to immune activation. When performed correctly, MAH has a lower adverse event rate than many conventional therapies.
